While the government is encouraging designers to make their websites accessible, it seems it isn’t practicing what it preaches.

Recent surveys suggest that the government’s own sites are far from perfect. The studies have shown that the sites seem to ignore basic web design principles, for example, the 10 Downing Street site front page is a massive 187Kb, while the Job Centre online site took an incredible one minute and twenty seconds to load.

In January Keynote systems reported that seven out of ten government sites had browser incompatibility problems.

The National Audit office, after surveying sixty five official sites in February, concluded “If government is to take full advantage of the potential of technology, it must make sure its e-services are accessible to all and work to avoid a digital divide”.
