Motoring Organisations

For disabled people, transport is a crucial part of independent living - for getting to work, visiting friends, shopping and the freedom to go further afield.

There are a number of specialist driving organisations who offer advice and publish information on matters of personal mobility - including vehicles and conversions, insurance and legal requirements. All operate branches and encourage local group meetings and events.

Disabled Drivers Association.
www.dda.org.uk
The Disabled Driver's Association is a self help organization run for disabled people by disabled people, and concerns itself with the needs of disabled people primarily by encouraging greater independence through enhanced mobility.

Mobility touches every aspect of disabled people's lives, whether they are drivers or passengers, using cars, wheelchairs, public transport or simply walking!

From its formation as a group of invalid tricycle users in 1948, the DDA has given a clear lead in the fight to improve mobility and access and to put an end to discrimination and segregation.

Disabled Drivers Motor Club
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/ddmc/
The DDMC was founded in 1922 by a number of ex-World War One veterans. One of the first successes of the Club was in the 1930s when there was a proposal that disabled drivers should be banned from driving. Following a lengthy battle, the Club obtained the right for all disabled drivers to hold a licence, subject to the same driving test as other people.

Having won that battle to preserve these rights, the club has taken an active role in preventing any changes in legislation that could affect the quality of life for disabled people.

From a small club it has grown to approximately 15,000 members from all walks of life and in every part of the United Kingdom, as well as many other parts of the world.
